nah, it just got integrated into winxp, so there's not as much need to download it anymore. Zip seems to be still the favorite over everything else, nearly every file i download is either an exe or a zip

I turned off that winxp zip integration thing. Really annoying. When you open up a folder it opens up all the zips to see whats in them to make a folder like structure. So great anytime when you open a folder with some zip files in it you have to wait ages...

Compression hasn't really got any better in decades. I remember on my Amiga everyone used LHA, then along came LZH that could compress 3% better and everyone started to switch over. But then you had compatibility issues, everyone had LHA, not everyone had LZH. Different interfaces to the tools.

Its the same with Zip files now. If you can compress a file to a 10th of its size, 1 or 2% difference in file size really isn't important. What is important is the portability and ease of use. Thats why Zip although not being the best at compression wins IMO.

I agree, I've stuck with Winzip and only use the others when forced to.

just use winRAR. its an all-in-one so to speak - reads any compressed file. its way better than winzip therefor wins IMO. although the compression is not much better, it just has more versatitliy than other compression tools.

winrar is a total winzip replacement.

i cant afford a 120gb HDD, i have a 60gb but its partitioned to share with the family so i only get 20gb, and i cant get anything faster than 512k 60/30 ADSL in my area (cable is unavailable), so compression is my friend.

and how much does 3x 120gb and a 2048/256 connection cost?! jesus i would probably have to save up for a year for all that stuff.

nah... its gone back down now... ntl must have been having problems. and its not quite 1.5mbit yet - was supposed to be getting upped in august. it is 256k up, 1mb down.

ntl are rumoured to be going up to 1.5mbit.. rumours i prooved by phoning and asking. i only said that cos they are upgrading, which will be a free upgrade.

The NTL upgrade should be sometime this month. Also WinRAR is by far the best once you have paid for it.

winrar has to be the worst compression tool ever created. :O

Dunno how you can say its the best.

It doesn't even let you select the directories you normally extract to. Doesn't let you create a folder. You cannot see the directory structure without traversing a load of pages. It also looks really ugly.

It sucks!
