I turned off that winxp zip integration thing. Really annoying. When you open up a folder it opens up all the zips to see whats in them to make a folder like structure. So great anytime when you open a folder with some zip files in it you have to wait ages...
Compression hasn't really got any better in decades. I remember on my Amiga everyone used LHA, then along came LZH that could compress 3% better and everyone started to switch over. But then you had compatibility issues, everyone had LHA, not everyone had LZH. Different interfaces to the tools.
Its the same with Zip files now. If you can compress a file to a 10th of its size, 1 or 2% difference in file size really isn't important. What is important is the portability and ease of use. Thats why Zip although not being the best at compression wins IMO.

i cant afford a 120gb HDD, i have a 60gb but its partitioned to share with the family so i only get 20gb, and i cant get anything faster than 512k 60/30 ADSL in my area (cable is unavailable), so compression is my friend.
and how much does 3x 120gb and a 2048/256 connection cost?! jesus i would probably have to save up for a year for all that stuff.

Death is God's way to say you failed selection...

ntl are rumoured to be going up to 1.5mbit.. rumours i prooved by phoning and asking. i only said that cos they are upgrading, which will be a free upgrade.

winrar has to be the worst compression tool ever created. :O
Dunno how you can say its the best.
It doesn't even let you select the directories you normally extract to. Doesn't let you create a folder. You cannot see the directory structure without traversing a load of pages. It also looks really ugly.
It sucks!
